Simon I picked it up to see what the crack was. Formation point costs are as they would be normally (so a 5pt Skeleton is still a 5 point Skeleton.) the more you take in the formation, the more it costs. Quite simple. They don't count towards any form of your points limits, so essentially eat into your non-core sections. So take a formation. Your giving up the toys in the army. They do have magic items, and their own special rules, but your army is also effected by the ally rules (BRB 136-139.) To be honest, it's a £2.50 charge to players, in an attempt to shift more of their Xmas box sets, but doesn't appear to be over powering.

Gaz, I know the rules and this particular formation isn't much of an issue, what worries me is what this could hold in future for WFB as these formations could lead to the same issues players have with Allies in 40k. I don't care what the arguements for and against Allies are, I just don't like the direction this is heading in and it worries me that it could unbalance the game, thats all.

Just to mention, some of the rumours point to these box sets not being christmas splash releases but the replacement for battlebox's, some of which have gone direct only or discontinued apparently.

Last few releases have not had a battle box released with them and they are pushing for a larger box release ( space marine strike force, Dark elves warhost of something) to come out with each release instead.

What better way to sell these box sets than give them special rules etc to make them more enticing and make some cash with micro-transactions?

First Look at Dataslate: Storm Wing

Dataslate: Adeptus Astartes Storm Wing is the latest release for the 2013 Advent Calendar (25 days of Digital Releases) by Games Workshop Digital. Formations are still a sticking point for many, as their full ramifications have not yet been utilized on the tabletop. One thing is for certain though is that formations and dataslates are going to become hugely popular.

So lets take a look at this new formation is.

Adeptus Astartes Storm Wing
The formation consists of 2 Storm Talons and a Storm Raven.

Data Lattice: As long as their is one storm talon alive, the formations Stormraven Gunship has the strafing special rule, which adds +1BS to shooting at ground targets, and adds pinning.

The next special rule, just allows the both Storm Talons to escort the Stormraven at the same time, resulting in one reserver roll, etc.

So while the special abilities might seem a bit underwhelming at first, there just might be some serious tactical advantages for this, after the Stormraven can excel at taking out ground units. Another thing this formation will allow, are more options for Space Wolves and other Imperial Armies that want to field these flyers, but have limited flyer options.

Both vehicles types are the units from codex: Space Marines.
