I just spotted this video by Adam Savage. WETA workshop (or more accurately one of their sculptors) has made a huge board of awesome looking modular terrain. Its also going to Kickstarter soon™.
Its worth looking at just for inspiration even if your not interested in yet another kickstarter.

I saw that video appear on Adam's Tested page, but didn't realise it was a Kickstarter. Will be keeping an eye on that. There are some talented folks at Weta.
