I have picked up 2 starter sets for Bolt Action, leaving me with the following:
German: 12 Grenadiers, 1 Half Track and 2 Panthers.
US: 24 Paratroopers and 3 Shermans
Could a viable force be made from either of these?
Any suggestions on what to add?
Also would any particular country be better to develop in terms of what forces other Bolt Action players have?
Thanks.

Not too sure about everyone else but I do have a small German force, about 500pts I think? Its been a while since I looked at them Tongue

I also went and got the Flames of War box, with the smaller scale models and put them on individual bases as well, for mini Bolt Action Smile

Very heavy on the armour! Great for big games, but does take a lot of points.
For your Germans, add panzershrek teams, and a mortar is always good. Then just add more infantry, oh and maybe an HMG.
Same for the US really.
Most games we have played we have had 3 squads, typically 30 figures, plus 3 or 4 specialist teams.
At the club we seem to have more allied players than German.
Also check out Chain of Command, a very good platoon sized skirmish game.
Hi Tony,
I have Fallshirmjager, British, and Yanks.
As Steve says 30 men plus HQ maybe add 1 tank.

You can get cheap figures from warlord right now, half price plastic sprues, something like 10 plastic figures for 4 quid, so I just bought some extras to fill out my Germans and brits. You can also get weapon sprues half price 2 quid, useful for getting extra Bren guns for brits, and and the like.

If you fancy a game book a date and we'll have a bash. I am hoping to play more WWII this year.

I am playing Stu next week at bolt action, if you want to join in and get a taste that's fine. If someone else wants to join in we can play two a side.

And as Steve says Chain of Command is also good fun rules. Steve and I are doing a campaign game.
Thanks for all the feedback.
In the short term I think I will follow Charlotte and build up the German side since there are fewer axis players.

Are things like mortars and HMGs just available as the small blisters or can they be made up from the bigger infantry sprues?
Is there a significant difference between standard Grenadiers and the FSJ or SS?

I will take you up on the offer to join/watch you and Stu next week Paul, unless someone is short of a partner for LOTR or SAGA.
Cheers.
If a I remember right, the only differences are weapon, and support choices, but playing them is pretty much similar. Also depends on the experience of your force. Last Bolt Action game I played against Paul, was inexperienced Home Guard v veteran Fallshirmjaegar. To hit is the same, but to wound changes. So Paul was hitting me on a standard 3+, and wounding on a 3+. I was hitting on the 3+, but wounding on a 5+.
When putting together the teams on the 60mm bases (eg a medium mortar team) do I need to keep the men detachable so that they can be taken off as casualties?

I did to make casualties a bit more obvious, but I don't think it's a requirement - you can always track casualties with counters or dice.
Exactly as Stu says ! Same with HMG teams and artillery crew.
