Giving a model a good wash prior to painting (and preferably) assembly is always advisable too. Sometimes (most often resin and occasionally metal) models will retain a coating of release agent on the model, which can cause an issue with paint adherence. It's less of an issue with platic models, but again it's a simple step that can prevent any future heart ache. Just wash them in warm soapy water, rince and allow them to dry, and that stage is done.
