6mm WW2
#1
the allied advance through the low countries was stalled on Tuesday. The Irish Guards Battlegroup had been advanced steadily, and early recon of the town of LaMerder had shown it to be unoccupied and an ideal place to rest up, while the rest of XXX corps caught up. Unfortunately, the German Gross Deutchland division had similar ideas. The Germans quickly occupied farms on the northern outskirts, and Panzergrenadiers began fortifying their positions. A Sqn of the Irish made a dash up the main road to secure the towns crossroads, but came under heavy anti tank fire , losing a Firefly to a PAK 40, blocking the road. Noticing the chruch occupied by german artillery observers, B Sqn , with artillery support, laid siege to the building, setting fire to it in the process. C Sqn, with the regimental HQ advanced on the left flank, securing the industrial part of town. then a noise like all the 5th of novembers you've ever experienced, all rolled in to one , erupted through the town and B Sqn disappeared in a fireball of rockets. I don't mind admitting the remaining troops were shaken, and things were about to get worse. On both flanks Tigers advanced, supported by the massive King Tiger. C Sqn fought bravely and managed to damage one tiger and destroy another, but at the cost of 4 Shermans and a Firefly. The left flank stalled as the M10 battled Panzer IV's destroying 1. more rockets destroyed all the supprt in the centre, while the Tigers opened up on the right. a fighting retreat was now initiated to avoid further losses. with all the armour destroyed, only the 2nd Battalion of the Irish guards( Infantry) manged to escape the slaughter. it was an overwhelming victory for the Germans. Plans are now in place for a fresh attack, with the Irish guards refitted and reinforced with the Welsh guards in reserve
