i like the idea of commanding a fleet so is this a good games to start with and learn?

Thanks

There seems to be some considerable interest in BFG at the moment, but unfortunately Games Workshop have discontinued it so supplies will dry up. You may be able to pick up a few bits and pieces on ebay though.

Alternatives may be one of the Spartan Games systems (Dystopian Wars, Firestorm Armada, Uncharted Seas - the latter mail order only) - a few of our chaps play Dystopian Wars. BFG seems to be the game with some momentum behind it within the group at the moment, so if you can source some miniatures then it might be worth a look.

Hey, I don't think supplies are anywhere near drying up at this point as there is still quite a lot on eBay, take a look at the Availability thread for more info.
That or pick up some FSArmada and proxy away. It's not like most of us don't do it for other systems.

Splendid idea, some nice models in the Firestorm Armada range.

Are they a similar scale though?
Scales irrelevant. If you base the models on GW stands, then it's all good, seeing as you measure from the flying stand.

Or did the rules change from their original inception?

It depends, sometimes from the stem, sometimes from the base but yeah your point is still valid. It'd be personal preference, I wouldn't want to use drastically different size ships as it would look weird compared to opponents ships.
